Using 3-D and conventional ultrasound images, two professors of radiology at Harvard Medical School give you a unique look into how your baby develops, from conception to birth. Drs. Peter Doubilet and Carol Benson explain what each image shows and what medical professionals look for to ensure that the baby is developing normally. The 3-D images show the baby’s “outside,” while the conventional ultrasound images, along with the medical explanation and unique drawings, help you understand what’s happening with your baby’s organs, skeletal and digestive systems, brain, and heart. Not to mention how to tell if it is a girl or a boy before birth!

You might start to find clothes tight now as you continue to put on weight. It is important that your weight gain in your pregnancy timeline is continuous and gradual. Any sudden gains or losses should be reported to your healthcare professional as soon as possible. Your doctor or healthcare professional will be monitoring your weight during your monthly visits. Keeping up with your exercise regime is very important.

Your uterus should be around the size of a grapefruit by week 9 so many of you will be purchasing maternity clothes around this time. The selections are huge and wonderful these days. If you are on a budget aim for clothing that will last the whole pregnancy. Op shops or charity shops have extremely cheap clothing if you don’t mind second hand stuff. The other bonus of op shops is that there is usually only one of each item so you have less chance of seeing someone else in ‘your’ outfit.

Your precious baby is now around 0.90 inch or 2.3cm. His or her weight is about 0.7oz or 2 grams and is around the size of a grape. The arms and legs continue to grow and the arms are now curving over the torso but not yet touching. The fingers are still developing and if you could see them, the ends would be out of proportion. Toes are also developing. The eye is starting to form a retina and eyelids will almost cover the eye. As the neck develops, it allows the head to be more erect instead of curved. Tiny ears are showing externally and some movement will be visible on an ultrasound. You now have a tiny person who looks almost human inside you.

As you begin to show your pregnancy, why not start taking photos of you growing tummy for your journal. It will be a visual pregnancy timeline for your baby in later life. Don’t you wish your mother had done this when she was pregnant with you?

Many people start to feel that their trousers or skirts are feeling a little tight around this time. It is not necessarily that your baby is that big yet, but you have put on weight with your pregnancy. Your uterus has grown from something smaller than a tennis ball to grapefruit size. If you are going to have morning sickness you will definitely have it by now. You could find yourself very weepy as your pregnancy hormones do their thing.

Unfortunately your fatigue has probably gotten worse as your body copes with the extra load of being pregnant. Pacing yourself throughout the day and having early nights is still the best way of coping. If you are not working try for short naps during the day.

Keeping fit and healthy will not only help your baby, it will make your pregnancy and labor much easier. Exercise and nutrition are so important, as is staying in shape. It is never too early to plan how you are going to spend the next seven months and even start thinking about the actual birth and how you want to approach it. Some excellent resources are Pregnancy Without Pounds and Birthright: Online Childbirth Education Classes

You are now two thirds of the way through your first trimester which is the normal danger period for a miscarriage or other complications. Taking care of yourself and your developing baby is very important so keep a close watch on what is happening with your body. If there are changes you are unsure of contact your doctor or healthcare provider, especially if you notice any spotting.

Your baby has undergone some amazing changes this week. There will be folds in the eyelids, a tip on his or her nose and the ears have started to develop. The heart has aortic and pulmanary valves and the lungs have developed bronchial tubes. Size wise is around 0.63 inch or 1.6cm. The trunk is starting to straighten though the head is still very large in comparison to the rest of the body. Arms are continuing to grow quickly and elbows are present. The cerebellum within the brain is also starting to develop.

You are up to week 7 already! Your pregnancy timeline has started to fly. Your body is getting used to the fact that you are pregnant and hopefully things are starting to settle down. You might still have some morning sickness for a few weeks but you will now be developing that special glow that pregnant women have.

It is a good idea to make an appointment with your dentist before your pregnancy develops much further. Your baby will be taking a lot of nutrients from you over the next 7 months so making sure your teeth are in good condition is an excellent idea. Teeth and hair seem to suffer when we are pregnant.

You should have settled into a routine of making sure you have enough rest each day and night. You will still be tired a lot of the time so having short rests will be of huge benefit to you both. Make sure you are eating and exercising properly and getting enough minerals and vitamins. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about what you should and should not be eating. Coffee, tea and salt will interfere with your body’s ability to absorb calcium needed for your baby’s growth. Perhaps now would be a good time to start cutting back on those things with a view of eliminating them completely by week 9. Good nutrition and exercise now are extremely important.

If you find you are having indigestion during this time, make sure you are eating small meals often during the day.

Sometimes you will have back pain at this time. The hormones in your body make your ligaments looser so aim to keep your spine straight when walking and sitting as much as possible throughout your pregnancy to reduce back pain. Avoid lifting anything heavy throughout your pregnancy if at all possible and wear flat heeled shoes.

Your baby has more than doubled in size during the week and should now measure around half an inch or approximately 12 mm. The arm and leg buds are starting to show and the heart has divided into the two chambers (left and right). The lungs are developing, as are the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. The eyes are continuing to develop, as are the nostrils. The heart beat would be visible on an ultrasound were you to have one now. Internal organs are also starting to develop and the tailbone is slowly disappearing. Keep your pregnancy timeline journal up to date so you have a wonderful record.

By week six you are probably sure that you are pregnant. If you haven’t made an appointment with your doctor or healthcare professional, now would be a good time to do so. He or she can give you information on your pregnancy and can advise on matters such as nutrition and exercise. It is not too early to start thinking about where and how you would like to have your baby (home birth, birthing center, water birth etc). Your doctor will probably give you a complete physical examination as well as taking a thorough medical history. A blood test will probably be needed to check for any abnormalities such as anemia. Talk to your doctor about pre-natal vitamins and extra omega tablets.

Remember to stay with your small meals often to help combat morning sickness. Your diet should include low GI foods such as multigrain or wholemeal breads, high fiber cereal, brown rice, pasta, meat and other protein sources such as eggs. Unfortunately fish is going to be off the menu during your pregnancy as it has been found to contain high levels of mercury which is bad for your developing baby. Moderate servings of fish such as shrimp, codfish, clams, salmon, scallops or flatfish should be safe to eat.

Fresh fruit (organic if possible) is wonderful to eat at any time so you should eat 3 – 4 pieces each day. Fresh vegetables or salads are also excellent and you can bulk up on these if you are feeling peckish. Avoid the soft cheeses which are unpasterized and can therefore be a breeding ground for listeria or other bacteria. Now would be a good time to change to the low fat milks and low sugar yoghurts. While excellent eating, they can be fattening. It is necessary to remember that what you eat or drink will be providing nourishment for your baby. If you are a smoker you must give up now. You are harming your baby and contributing to a possible low birth weight by smoking. Alcohol is another no-no – it can seriously harm your baby’s brain development.

Your baby has grown to about 0.012 inches or 3-4mm. The heart will start beating some time this week and the eyes will begin to form. The head and brain will develop quickly during this time. Your uterus will be about the size of a plum. You could find that you are starting to put on weight. Keeping a watch on this will help prevent excessive weight gain which is harder to lose once your baby is born.

Don’t forget to keep track of everything that is happening in your journal. It is so easy to forget things with the excitement and amount of new things occuring.

You probably still feel as if you are floating on a cloud of happiness. The fact that you are pregnant seems to take up most of your waking thoughts. This is totally normal. You are at the beginning of a wonderful experience, probably the most profound experience a person can have. Enjoy every moment of it, even the uncomfortable ones if possible.

Now might be a good time to start a “Pregnancy Timeline Journal” of your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Write as much or as little as you feel like but get it down on paper, there will be so many wonderful things happening that you won’t be able to remember them all. Just imagine being able to give your child this journal later in life, perhaps when they are starting their own journey to becoming a parent.

By five weeks you won’t ‘look’ pregnant though a very few of you might have trouble doing up zips on your trousers. Bloating can occur so it is nothing to be worried about. You may start to ‘feel’ pregnant around five weeks if you have morning sickness. Be aware that this is a normal part of pregnancy and affects approximately half to two thirds of pregnant women. It normally passes by the end of the first trimester (week 12) though for some it may last longer. Just remember that it will end.

You have no doubt found that your bladder signals ‘full’ at the most inopportune time. You can be on the bus, walking down the street or simply relaxing with a good book. Again, this is normal. The uterus lies on top of the bladder and as it expands with your baby, it presses down on the bladder. Many pregnant women wear a revert to wearing a pad to give themselves a measure of confidence in the case of a leak. Don’t be embarrassed by this, it is completely normal.

Your breasts will continue to enlarge and be very tender. It might be a good idea to invest in some good bras at this stage. Many stores will have staff that can advise on the best type for your circumstances. I found that by wearing good quality bras throughout my pregnancy and while breast feeding (including night times when I slept), it stopped my breasts from sagging due to the extra weight. Unless you have very small breasts, this is a good idea.

You are probably experiencing fatigue as your body’s hormones adjust to the pregnancy. You will also have progesterone coursing through your veins which will make you feel lethargic. Don’t try to fight this. Give in gracefully and get as much rest and sleep as you can. Don’t be alarmed if you notice your temperature is higher than normal, this is due to the progesterone.

There have been some fairly major developments with your baby. It has grown to about 1.25mm or .05 inches and is developing the areas that will become the central nervous system, heart, muscles as well as bone formation. The facial features also begin to develop around week five and continue developing to about week nine.

You might not be aware that you are pregnant by week 4, you could be waiting for your period to start and wondering why you are a few days late. If you have planned your pregnancy timeline you might be getting a little excited about being late. Your breasts may be feeling a little tender but you aren’t completely sure yet. If you have an increased vaginal discharge, mood swings and decreased bladder capacity and energy you could be pregnant. You might feel you have PMS and are just waiting for that period to arrive. A home pregnancy test should be able to give you a result though if it does come back negative, wait another week and try again. Some women might not register positive for another week or so.

The egg, which is now fertilized, is becoming more embedded in the lining of your uterus. There is a very early version of your placenta forming though the yolk sack will feed your baby until the placenta is ready to take over.

The layers of cells which will become the parts of your baby’s body whill have already started to form. For the technically minded the layers are called the ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm. Suffice it to say it is the beginning of what will eventually become your baby. At present it is tiny, only about 1mm or .04 inches long. Another development around this time is something called the primitive streak which will eventually become the brain and spinal cord. The arm and leg buds have begun to form but are not distinguishable.

If you are on any medications now would be a good time to speak to your health practicioner or doctor and advise them that there is a chance you may be pregnant.

You want to have the best environment for your baby to develop in, so now would be a good time to give up excessive amounts of coffee or tea, or excessive anything. Gentle exercise will keep your body in shape and good nutrition and healthy eating will provide the correct nutrients for your baby. Keeping aware of your pregnancy timeline will let you know just what is happening with you and your baby.

You’re pregnant! Congratulations! If you’re anything like me you want to know exactly what is happening to you and your baby right now, next week and for the next 9 months. A sort of pregnancy timeline that you can follow and learn from. And if you are like 98% of moms to be, you just be itching to skip ahead a few weeks to see what else is coming.

So let’s get started.

Probably the first thing you’ll notice, perhaps even before you’ve missed a period, is that your breasts are tender to touch and feel heavy. They may have already gotten larger as they prepare for breast feeding when the time comes. Your areolas are generally starting to get larger and darker and your hormones are all over the place. You are excited about the pregnancy but will burst into tears at the drop of a hat. Your appetite may change and you could find yourself spending more time racing to the toilet for not much result.

You may feel some nausea or morning sickness but this usually passes by the end of the third month. If it is possible to have a cup of tea and some toast before you get out of bed (smile sweetly at your partner), it can help reduce your morning sickness. I did this and had no nausea at all. Be aware that not all morning sickness occurs in the morning. It can hit you at any time of the day. You will probably also find that you want to sleep more as you get tired so easily. Don’t worry, this is due to progesterone which has a sedative affect on you.

At four weeks your baby is a tiny embryo made up of two layers of cells that will become all the organs and body parts. For those of you who like technical names, the two layers are called the epiblast and hypoblast. The placenta is developing ready to deliver nutrients and oxygen to your baby. The uterus lies on top of the bladder so as it starts growing, it pushes down on your bladder creating that ‘need to go’ feeling.

Learn to trust yourself. Your body is going through a huge mental, physical and emotional change. Don’t be frightened by what is happening. Find yourself a good doctor and a good friend that you can share with. Remember that every pregnant woman probably has the same fears and worries that you have.

Take care of yourself, especially in these early days and weeks. Good nutrition and exercise now will pay off later. Rest as much as you can, and don’t get too upset at the roller-coaster ride your emotions have put you on.

While the excitement is still high, sit down with your partner and discuss how you will manage with a baby. Financial concerns need to be got out of the way early. Children don’t come cheap. You need to know if you can survive on one income if you are unable to work. It is also a good idea to start putting some money away each week towards the birth and setting up a nursery and buying necessary items such as a pram and baby clothes. We’ll go further into those items later on in our timeplan for pregnancy.

Pamper yourself as much as you can. You deserve it because what is happening now is a miracle. The miracle of having a new life grow within you. There is nothing quite like it. So lie back in a wam bath with some scented candles and a glass of orange juice and dream.
